What first attracted you to advertising?
Every nickel I had as a kid, nearly burned a hole in my pocket before I could get to Square Deal Market to buy baseball cards. I liked the wrapper (packaging), the gum (the bonus) and of course collecting my favorite players (product).
What was your first job in advertising?
I spent three years as a one-person, in-house, creative department for a large insurance company. This was before computers. I had a drafting table, Rapidograph pens, a Vemco drafting scale, a copier that actually enlarged and reduced and a Compugraphic Editwriter 7770 with which I learned to set type—all in code, no preview screen. Aaaah, how I love Apple.
What is your favorite movie?
Dr. Zhivago. I saw it at an outdoor theater when I was 10-years-old. The scene where the characters, played by Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, cross paths years later, completely unaware of their close proximity, is indelibly imprinted on my brain. That, and the fact that I was instantly smitten with Julie Christie. She still doesn't know.
What do you bring to the table?
An open-mindedness to entertain all input, no matter from whence it comes. Digest the objectives, work in unison with strategic partners (both internally and on the client side) to create solutions that resonate with audiences.
What makes you tick?
I'm competitive. I'm sure this comes from being the fourth of nine children, and one of four brothers who were wrestlers. When we join forces with a client, I want them to win. I want their business to succeed and grow. I want to body slam their competition. No, I’m not talking about the bogus WWF here. I’m talking the real deal.
What does a great business day look like?
A house—or in this case a horse-drawn artillery barn—full of my colleagues challenged to come up with the next big idea or strategy designed to forward our clients’ missions. Fostering an atmosphere where we are each expanding our cerebral envelope. It can be exhausting, but it's fun to be pushed to excel.
What makes your company different?
We take our work very seriously, but we also work at interjecting as much fun into the equation as we can. We attempt to be the calm in the storm for our clients. People appreciate the fact that we don’t act like we work in an ivory tower. Our tower is actually purple:)
Why should I choose diedrichHARMON?
Perhaps for many of the reasons our current clients have chosen us. The work must work. Ours does. We’re on their team. Our clients know firsthand, we’ll go to extraordinary lengths to accomplish their mission. We’re sharp. We cut to the chase and distill abstract ideas into well-focused, strategic plans with uranium-enriched creative thinking.
What is your favorite cartoon character?
Old school? Hekyl and Jekyl. New school? Dexter.
In your opinion, who is a standout in your industry?
God. He’s the best creative I know. Of course, I like Stephen Colbert a lot too, but he’s not really in the industry.
