What was your first job in advertising?
During the ‘80s, I worked for a large Indiana association. I was responsible for event planning, and the production of the annual report and monthly newsletter. I created headlines with a Kroy machine and used a typewriter to develop the articles in one- and two-column formats. Even though I dabbled in layout, I soon began focusing on ways to make these programs more efficient and effective.
If I asked your children what you do, how would they answer?
When my children were younger, they would tell people that I talked on the phone, typed on a machine and wrote lots of notes. Now they are very well aware of what I do for a living and make sure I know what advertising they deem to be done well and that which is done very badly (somehow they believe I can control all of the advertising universe).
What is your favorite movie?
I like many movies, but I actually don’t have a favorite one (well, I was pretty enamored with disco at one point, so Saturday Night Fever is up there). I’m more of a Broadway gal. Old favorite: Chicago. New favorite: Wicked.
What makes you tick?
Solving problems and challenges. Today’s environment is highly competitive and fast-paced. I enjoy helping clients step back and look at their business differently—perhaps discovering a different way to go to market or a better way to influence their audience. I also am highly motivated to streamline. By providing structure in some areas of business, you can unleash the power of creativity in others.
What does a great business day look like?
Okay, I have to admit it. A great business day includes marking items off my TTD (“Things to do”) list. And yes, it counts if you do something and write it in, then cross it off! What did you expect? I’m a Type A! Well, not completely. I’m really a hybrid—creativity and logic both fighting for attention… but don’t tell Doug. Beyond the TTD list however, a great day includes solving a challenge as a team and making the client look really good!

What is your favorite cartoon character?
Road Runner – he’s so strategic, don’t you think?
In your opinion, who is a standout in your industry?
Definitely David Aaker on branding. Reis and Trout are also must-reads for me. Recently new information is coming out regarding mind-mapping and the psychology of branding. I personally haven’t seen any standouts yet in this emerging category… but I’m watching!
